About
In an alternate history Europe, “The Nightcap” is the last speakeasy in town, and you’re pouring the drinks… while your customers spill their secrets. Mix and serve cocktails with a twist, as you become a detective while trying to save your bar.

Listen to your clienteles’ stories and learn about their lives as you unravel a mystery that touches every layer of Bukovie society, from the drunken dandies splashing cash on cocktails, to the crooked cops and seedy lowlifes who try to rope you into their shady schemes.
A good bartender knows the art of conversation is just as important as the ability to pour libations, so listen carefully and keep your wits about you as you delight, charm or even threaten your patrons to get the information you need. With a cast of 20 unique and engaging characters it’s up to you to choose who you can trust, who will have your back… and who will stab you in it!

Over the course of five cases, you’ll have to explore every clue and question every suspect to save lives… and save your business. It’s time to flip that sign to open, turn up the jazz and welcome your first customers of the night.
Bukovie may be a city in strife, with labour strikes, rationing, unrest and the shadow of war looming, but instead of cowering in fear, the citizens flock to dance halls and speakeasies. Crumbling grandeur might inspire melancholy, but that’s nothing a stiff drink won’t cure.
In a world of dwindling light, your speakeasy is a bonfire in the night. Though the city may soon burn, cocktails are always…
Best Served Cold.

After a very promising demo, I regret having to say that I can't recommend this game. The concept is great and some of the mechanics and cases were really fun or just needed some polishing, but there are a few glaring issues specifically with the writing and worldbuilding that I cannot ignore. Unfortunately due to Steam's limitations I will have to focus only on those. In essence, my gripe with the game is the stark disconnect between what it is doing and saying versus what it seems to be setting out to do. I've tried to split my criticism in two parts, though they overlap. Spoiler warning for the entire game! 1. The writing itself: Beyond a pretty sizeable amount of spelling and punctuation errors, the writing seems very flat and lacking nuance. This is noticeable in the character design: most characters are simply portraying one or several stereotypes (all the way down to their drink orders!), antagonists are mostly cartoon villains that you're really really meant to hate, that are irredeemable and do not deserve to be heard, except for one very special antagonist who is actually different and you are meant to understand and excuse their actions, because you take so long to learn about these special differences, and you're meant to put in a lot of effort to let them get off easy. Romancing a character (which I think didn't need to be in the game at all) turns them into a romantasy character with generic lines, stripping them of their personalities. Both the game and the characters insist on always telling me how to feel about characters and events, everyone's feelings are also generally spelled out very clearly as if they are attending a therapy session. Most of the character development is done off camera, which might also explain why, especially towards the end of the game, it felt very rushed. It seems to be mostly reserved for men, the women barely have any flaws and their struggles concern external influences rather than their own flaws. 2. The deeper worldbuilding: Using the 20s/prohibition era as inspiration for a fantasy world is an interesting concept (I definitely enjoy a 20s aesthetic), though the intrigue ends when you add blatant references to real countries (some of which even share the same names?). You will end up with a fantasy China, referred to as an "Empire", a place void of diversity, a place people need to leave to find faith (aka a woke sort of christianity) and meaning in their life. This compared to the game's setting, the fictional city of Bukovie, Tsara (inspired by Romania, presumably?), a melting pot of cultures...and...colonies? (Positive or at least neutral? In comparison to the Empire, which...is bad?). See also the character from fantasy Russia, who herself comments on how she does not really have a culture and instead prefers learning about other cultures, and ultimately becomes a plot device: the "good" foreigner that gets to "fix" the raging xenophobe character and forms such a strong bond with him that she then has to suffer the most when he is hurt. (Though that said, the writing takes a lot of care to remind you that despite some "troubling" views, said character has been a beacon for his community, a true saint who does not deserve anything bad to happen to him.) Xenophobia overall seems to be the most important issue in this fictional world, and it is most openly applied to a white, Western European man (which might seem like the safe option, though then again, his salvation comes in form of a different, actually evil foreigner who did in fact do the horrible crime). In fact, xenophobia, classism and, to some extent, misogyny, seem to be the only glaring societal issues this fictional country has, to the point where a black woman experiencing discrimination is not even allowed to talk about racism, instead defaulting to vague statements about "vulnerable groups" that are "not in power". Even more noticeable is the complete lack of discrimination against the queer characters. There are several openly gay and lesbian characters as well as a nonbinary person. They are all well respected (beyond class differences), nobody displays any sort of queerphobia nor is it reported. I assume this might have been something close to the devs' heart or catering to the intended audience, but it seems very odd to cherrypick and cartoonify certain issues from the inspiration while ignoring others or being so strangely vague about them. I think this in combination with the generally quite shallow writing ruins the mature, "social commentary" angle the game seemingly attempts to take, which makes for a strange dissonance while playing. All in all, I just wish that more care had been taken representing these very real issues and incorporating real world inspiration into a fantasy world, and that all characters had been given a similar amount of nuance in development.

The game is amazing. The story is captivating, I didn't know what to expect from each next chapter. Gameplay is always the same, you talk with people, serve drinks, present stuff and learn to build your case. You got enough time and action points to do it even if you fail miserably. First chapter is basically to learn, so don't worry if you do it a bit wrong (I did). Graphically speaking, the game is beautiful, but it lacks backgrounds, it's always the same 2 places, bar and home. You don't really need more, but it would be a nice touch to change the bar between cases, since there are usually separated by several months. If you like Ace Attorney games, this game is very much like it, but simpler. You don't move to locations, you don't have a linear way to advance the story, and in my opinion, is way harder to fail in this game. You get clues, you ask questions, you present clues and get more clues, and when you get a motive and the weapon, you present your case and wait for it to be right or wrong. The stories for each character are quite nice, some of them are very profound, and you can see the growth of some of them. I actually grew fond of some of the characters, and I also came to dislike others. To put it short, if you enjoy visual novels and doing some detective work, you will enjoy this game, and as an avid Ace Attorney fan, I recommend it! I can't wait to play Last Night Last Call, specially since knowing some characters I liked from this game are also on it. And I truly truly hope they bring your past choices to the new game, it would be nice to get some mentions to it!

A fun point & click murder mystery that I overall do recommend. I really enjoyed the dialogue with the different characters and I liked that there were romanceable characters not just for the player, but people that the player could set up with one another. It was fun and kept me playing each case past the day I'd solved it just to get each person's meter as full as I could. That said, there were two things that I feel held me back in this game and that I hope the devs will improve for their next one. 1. Making the drinks - while the minigame was fun at first, it became boring and grating as time went on. I think for what is basically a visual novel, I would have preferred to do a harder mini-game one time to "learn" the drink and then I could serve it bypassing that mini-game for the rest of the game (or chapter, at least). 2. The romance options didn't change the ending of the game. I liked the little dialogue flairs that would come about but I think that if your character romances one (or more) characters, there should be a scene with them at the end of the game. 2.5. (Kinda part of 2.) Not enough Peter! I wanted to see an ending where he gets his life together. I CAN FIX HIM I SWEAR Those gripes aside, I'm very much looking forward to Rogueside's next project!
There’s something deeply romantic about the idea of speakeasies. On the one hand, there’s a conscious understanding that they served as the fronts for mob empires through the 1920s, and that they were the fuel for engines built on suffering. On the other hand, when paired with the naive glamour of the same era - the short hair, shorter skirts, and knowledge that life would never be better than it was in that moment - the idea of people shyly shushing one another over the click of illicit glasses is an almost cosy one. There’s a soft glow around it and perhaps around the idea that their problems are so much more innocent than the ones we now enjoy. It’s this cosy innocence that’s part of what makes Best Served Cold such a delight. Everything in the game takes on this nostalgic haze for an era that never existed and a vision of the past that never was. You feel yourself getting lost in the idea of what was, the stories that could have been, and the faint hints of conversations you never were and never will be part of. The speakeasy in this game is predicated on atmosphere, but ultimately, it’s that focus on atmosphere that permeates the game itself. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3802346534 Best Served Cold is a visual novel with mystery elements set in a fictional speakeasy. You play as the bartender, serving drinks and chatting with customers, while trying to get to the bottom of a particular mystery. Getting them just the right level of drunk is critical to extract that one, last clue that makes it clear who the culprit is. Best Served Cold advertises itself as a murder mystery, and while this is true, this is not the heart of what it is. The solution to the mystery itself is generally clear within a few days of investigating it, and the time the game provides for solving it is so ample as to be a bit absurd. This is not a game that is setting out to challenge your skills of deduction. Instead, Best Served Cold is very much a visual novel, with the murders being solved serving as a series of vignettes through which the player can engage with the characters in the story. That there is a mystery to solve plays almost second fiddle to the game of learning more about the characters, their wants, their needs, and their dreams. The player is encouraged to learn each character’s favourite drink, to befriend them, to listen to them, ostensibly to solve a murder, but more often than not to offer advice, to set them up with someone else at the bar, or just to hear their particular story. Players solve the mystery by discussing clues with the various speakeasy patrons. Should the patron like the player enough or be drunk enough, they may share some insight that moves the investigation forward. Collect enough clues, and the answer to the mystery becomes clear. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3802346917 That solving the mystery relies on showing clues to the speakeasy’s patrons is both the game’s strength and its weakness. This is, again, a game that relies on its story and the strength of its characters to hold the player’s interest. The strength of that writing shows through in spades, with the characters feeling alive and compelling every moment they’re on the screen. It’s a delight to learn more about them and to watch their reactions to the various bits of information being hurled at them. However, that only certain characters can move the mystery forward also makes progressing in the mystery frustrating. The cast of characters in the speakeasy in any given night varies, meaning that a clue that clearly needs to be shown to a specific character might not be shown to that character for several days. While the time limit is substantial enough that this isn’t an issue with completing the game, when you as a player already know how the mystery will resolve and want to just get to said resolution, there is a frustration in opening the bar over and over to not see that one specific character sitting there. When paired with a lack of conversation options once the initial options have been exhausted, there come points where the game is less a game and more a process of repeating the same drink-making mini-game over and over to accrue relationship points for a purpose unknown to anyone but the devs. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3802347102 With that said, there is an undeniable charm to Best Served Cold. Its music is a delight, and it is genuinely wonderful to sit in this speakeasy and enjoy its ambience. While the story itself may plod along at a pace that can be frustrating to get through, the story is arguably not the point. The point is the people, the stories they tell, and the world they do their best to live in. The deeply varied cast of characters presents a broad picture of a world that does not exist, yet still somehow feels like, somewhere in the dimly lit past, it might. The atmosphere is there, and ultimately, that’s all there ever needed to be. I loved it, it's Coffee Talk meeting some Noire fiction like Raymond Chandler's books ; the ending was so great, didn't see it coming ! and I loved the fact the characters grows over the chapters, gives them more depth and background. Looking forward to play their next game, already wishlisted !
