BORING GAME, NO FUN. First thing: Sound design is so bad that at the start of the game if you stay still you wont hear anything. Second: Other then running around you dont do much, just some interacions and thats it. the game intro is too long, maybe you can do it while showing more things. Its REALLY HARD to find things around, and arrow is well appreciated and it doesnt ruin the ambiance. i get it its a new game but it needed more work behind it.

For a free game that takes < 1 hour to play, can't complain about the money or time investment. You can tell this is the Dev's quick pilot for what was to become the At Night series (which they have dropped, as of this review, 3 more titles that increasingly get better than the last). Overall, this game's story feels like an intro into a serial killer/kidnapper and you are playing the role of one of his victims. The gameplay was fine. I did enjoy how you received pictures on the in-game cell phone to figure out where to go (but with the advancements in technology, you think they'd just use the GPS and give addresses lol). The ominous fog that does not allow you to see too far ahead makes you feel worried like someone will come running out, great tension. So yeah, in short, if you want to just jump right into At Night, go for The Nurse. But, if you want the full end-to-end experience, pick this one up and knock it out really quick.
At Night: The Student is a short psychological horror game that takes a pretty normal school day and slowly makes it feel wrong. I play as Mio, a 16 year old student living in a quiet neighbourhood in Japan while her mother is away. At first I am just getting ready, going to school and following my usual routine, but there is a much darker situation happening around me. The idea of having to carry on with normal life while knowing a kidnapper is somewhere nearby gives the game a simple but effective setup. What I like most is the way the game makes me find my own way around. I get simple objectives on screen, but I am not given a normal waypoint telling me exactly where to go. Mio receives photos on her phone showing real locations, so I have to recognise streets, alleyways and landmarks and work out where I need to be. I think that is a good fit for the quiet neighbourhood because it makes me pay attention to the environment instead of just following an arrow. It also gives the exploration a slightly more natural feeling. The atmosphere is easily the strongest part for me. The game uses a realistic VHS inspired visual style, and the ordinary Japanese neighbourhood becomes much more uncomfortable because of how normal everything looks. I am walking through streets, visiting shops and going about daily routines, but I know something is not right. I like horror games that can make familiar places feel unsettling without constantly throwing monsters at me. There is no combat here either, so I am relying completely on the atmosphere and the situation to create tension. The biggest problem is the length. The whole experience is designed to take around 20 minutes, which means there is only so much time for the story and horror elements to develop. I actually think the short length suits the idea because the game does not have enough material to justify stretching everything out, but it also means I finish it before I have much chance to become deeply invested in the characters or mystery. There are 17 achievements and multiple endings, which gives me a reason to return, but the main experience is still very brief. I also think the simplicity can work against it. There are no complicated puzzles and the objectives themselves are straightforward, so most of the challenge comes from figuring out where I am supposed to go. I like that approach, but there are moments where I am basically just walking around trying to match the phone photo to the environment. That can be immersive when I recognise the location, but it can also slow things down when I am searching for a specific street or landmark. I would have liked a little more interaction or a few stronger story moments without turning it into a completely different type of horror game. For what it is trying to be, though, I think At Night: The Student has a clear identity. It does not try to turn itself into an action horror game or fill the short runtime with unnecessary mechanics. I am simply following Mio through her routine, exploring the neighbourhood and slowly becoming more aware of the danger around her. I like that the game trusts the setting and atmosphere rather than giving me constant jump scares. Being free also makes the short runtime much easier for me to accept because I can experience the whole thing without needing to make a big commitment. Overall, At Night: The Student is a short but atmospheric horror experience that I think works best when I treat it as a quick story rather than a full length horror game. I like the realistic VHS style, quiet Japanese setting, photo based navigation and the idea of having to continue an ordinary routine while something dangerous is happening nearby. The very short runtime and limited interaction stop it from reaching a really high rating for me, but I think the atmosphere is strong enough to make the experience worthwhile. It feels more like a tense little horror episode than a full game, and for something that is completely free, I think it does a decent job with the limited time it gives me. Rating: 7.4/10
ok so, let me first start of with the sounds. so we got the basic wood floor sounds, not even well done, you can hear the cut into the loop and here background noise from the developer. and no matter where you go, grass, concrete, still sounds like wood. The microwave is fine but the eating food doesn't even sound like food the water of the bathtub feels like a while tidal wave spawned in and drowned you. Second, the visuals. It isnt bad bad but still kinda bad, the buildings are ok for a lower poly game but its way too blurry and is unsettling for the eyes. the people have sharpie smudged faces and the scary faces are just cheap jumpscares. third, the animations. where are they and why so little fourth, the achievements. why do we need so many, will i get a achievement for taking a ♥♥♥♥? i woke up in the game and got a achievement, stopped alarm, wash hands, brush teeth, pick up food and microwave and walk out door, all achievements, you can just tell the whole story of the game just by looking at the achievements. fifth. the story is meh, stereotypical horror topic not done right also all find things instructions are like nonexistent, its like finding waldo ina place where everyone is wearing the exact outfit as him. overall crappy game, not finnished and sloppy, dont know if this is a test game or yeah. also why can i type on the objective text when pressing the tab key.
