Introduction
Astrovikings is an arcade-style game where you take control of an astroviking (duh; don’t know if she has an actual name tho) to fight off an endless horde of enemies. Despite being a pretty solid, fast paced singleplayer game, it’s actually a pain in the bumhoe as it combines the suffering pain of a bullet hell game.
Gameplay
If you played any wave survival based games, then it won’t be too different for you. Just kill aliens to complete the wave. You have also a dash ability and a vortex attack that sucks the aliens in while also doing a little bit of damage to them. Before each wave, you can upgrade your basic, dash and vortex attacks by spending points, which you can earn simply by playing the game. You can also spend points to spend some of your health though you need to be wary of the cost as it increases the more you use it. There are two modes; Classic and Ragnarok, which is unlocked at wave 25 in classic mode (haven’t reached ragnarok cus I haven’t reached wave 25... :C). There’s also a leaderboard, if you care about that sort of thing. As you play through each wave, it gets progressively harder, making you to do some upgrades. If you die, then you get no continues. There is however a checkpoint start-thingy where you can start from waves 1, 10 and 20. It might tick you off (like I did) but it makes the game pretty replayable. Also for some other players, there’s no difficulty setting and although the tutorial is short, sweet and simple, it doesn’t tell you too much about the alien’s fire pattern. There’s also isn’t a way to re-do the tutorial. Not that it matters but hey, it would be nice if players haven’t played it in a while. I really wish there would be more map varieties to choose from. So yea, pretty good but some strikes are against it, though they aren’t really an issue.
Visuals
The visuals are good however, I felt like it was a bit too similar to the previous game, TimeTekker. The background, enemies and colours felt too similar in my opinion but (barely) unique enough to pass.
Music+SFX
Music is pretty solid. The boss wave music kinda sounds like a pokemon battle theme. Everything else is good but not really catchy in my opinion. But overall, solid.
Conclusion
Astrovikings is a solid game for its default $3 price point. If you like singleplayer action games, then I’d say give it a go, however you will need to master its pain as there isn’t a difficulty setting and also no continues. If it isn’t your thing, then you can safely pass this one. Other than that, I’d recommend it overall.
Shoutout
Special thanks to Artii Games LLC for sending us a copy to review! I really enjoyed the game overall. And yea… thank you so much for sending this lovely game to review! Hope to see more from you soon!
Pros
+ Nice visuals + Nice music + Good power upgrade mechanic + Highly replayable + Offers a nice bit of challenge
Cons
-No difficulty setting -No continues -Some visuals are too similar to TimeTekker -Tutorial is only played once (not rly an issue but nice to replay for those who need it)
Rating
7.5/10 Signed by 𝓐𝓈𝒽 𝓥𝑒𝓇𝓂𝒿𝓁𝓁𝒾𝑜𝓃 of the ᴀɴιᴍᴇ Steam Community Group
Follow the ᴀɴιᴍᴇ Curator Page for more Steam game reviews like this one!
