Silly game about exploring solar system. I'd say main feature is fully deformable down to their cores planets. Has a lot of quests to guide you, reward system is sometimes useful, sometimes "do the thing, get one for free". Has quest branches which explain additional lore. Does not really have grand goal. Sure, you should explore every planet and its POIs - but other than that, you yourself have to justify why are you running around for 4 hours straight. For me it is not a problem, however it can turn down some people. Main shortcoming for me is craftable things - there are a lot of them; however, half of these things were not really viable to me. Sure, I can craft scrap recycler, or automatic arm, or other things; but do I need it? or do I move on to another planet because I already did what I want and there is no meaning for automation? Almost always answer was the latter, partially because of lack of motivation to automate/etc. But in the end, knowing all these nuances, I still find Astroneer very chill and enjoyable game, though it would be much more fun with friends. Yes, niche game, but solid 4/5.
I've never encountered such a badly explained game where you are just left to wander around without any guidance whatsoever. Where do I find the components I need to find?! The mission log just says find X but doesn't guide me to knowing where the ♥♥♥♥ they are. Doesn't explain where I need to find components and there is also a bug where you get stuck between 's tyres a buggy at the very beginning of the game and end up suffocating.
Unless you have played this game already, or have the patience of a saint and tenacity of a rabid pit bull, avoid this game like the plague! Seriously, this game has NO in-game tutorial or guide to help you do anything - you play an astronaut, have to perform tasks, but you are given zero knowledge of how to do them whatsoever. Also, gameplay is not in any way whatsoever intuitive, and I found dozens and dozens of online comments that reiterate that feeling. After playing for 29 minutes, just trying to complete the first basic task - connect a "tether" (hose) to an oxygen generator - I gave up trying to figure out how, and according to some online users, there once was an ingame interactive tutorial, but the developer removed it in an update? Like, what? How stupid can you get? Anyhow, game deleted and requested refund from Steam.
Big poo poo. No online play unless you invite friends. No tutorial. Aimless gameplay without objectives. Building is clunky and unintuitive (i.e. if you place a chair on a car you then can't undo or move the chair and have to instead build another car). Game uses cheap and recycled voxel based gameplay to modify terrain, except there are no prefrabricated structures to allow easier movement or design (e.g. stairs, floors, walls, conveyor belts). All you have is a tool to delete or place terrain in a sphere around your cursor. Wish I knew about steam returns when i bought this game in EA way back. Waste of time. Just play either sequel of Grounded or Subnautica for a much more expanded and refined experience. Even at $10 at discount I would never recommend this game, unless you were 6 years old and had never played anything on Steam before. Definetly do not buy this at $40 full price.
I have like 4 or 5 hundred hours on this game on my xbox. I had gotten used to the clunky controller UI and controls, so much so that I actually enjoyed the bad controls. Whenever I asked to play this game with my brothers, who were playing on mouse and key, all they would do is complain about the controls. Now, I had thought they were overplaying it and I told them "oooh it's not so bad when you get used to it!" Boy, was I wrong. When I got the game on steam and played it for the first time with mouse and key I finally, truly understood how abysmally ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ the controls were. I'd forgotten the hundreds of good hours I've had with this game and could only think about how butt the controls are. So bad in fact, I didn't even want to plug my controller in to play and just wanted to log off. If this was my first time experiencing this game I think I would hate and likely refund it, like my brothers did. Please please please PLEASE change the keyboard and mouse control scheme for this game. And if YOU play this game plug in a controller. It's still bad, but much better.
This game used to be amazing. But with the addition of buggy patches and microtransactions it's no longer fun.
It feels like the game is actively fighting me when I'm trying to interact with it. From the clunky UI to the borderline nauseating camera smoothing, I don't feel like the game can allow me to have fun with it. Kind of a bummer
Cute game, great graphics but somewhat style over substance. Certain areas of the game are really hard work, e.g .moving items in and out of your bag and into storage. Overall cute game but only viable if you use mouse and keyboard - far too fiddly for a controller.
I have 400 hours in this game at time of writing, and I'm likely going to accumulate more over time. With that being said, would I recommend this game? Eh. I've been playing since early access / open beta, and while the game has seen significant improvement since then, many of the core bugs and issues with the game have persisted for that entire time. Collision detection remains mediocre and unimpressive, with frequent issues. Research is largely trivialized after 2 hours of gameplay or so and without that much of each planet is reduced to useless decoration with no incentive to explore it. The UI is frankly abysmal, and locating objects to print only becomes more frustrating as you unlock more items and tools to use. The inventory is rather small and is the biggest reason I don't explore more past early game locating resources, as even the full 13 slots are woefully insufficient for the sheer number and variety of materials I might find use for. Saves still trigger every time you use any kind of chair or shelter, which causes freezes and stutters when using either while you wait for the game to save. This game could be fun if it's exactly your kind of thing, just definitely wait for a sale on it. Especially for $30 this isn't anything exceptional in the sandbox exploration genre. I would skip the DLC as they seem to be content island that don't integrate very well into the base game, with Glitchwalkers being entirely separate and Megatech only becoming usable/relevant when you've trivialized everything that isn't part of the DLC itself. Frankly, there's better versions of this game in the 10 years since it came out, and you'd probably be better off getting one of those unless you're in it to play with friends. Also, skip all the microtransactions, they're by far the most disappointing thing.
