Asteroid Forward is a fun little space shooter that I found easy to pick up almost immediately. I am constantly moving upward through the Z9 Galaxy, fighting waves of enemies and trying to keep my ship alive while collecting useful power ups. I liked how quickly the game gets into the action because there is very little standing between me and the next fight. The core shooting feels simple but satisfying. Enemies keep appearing as I move through each stage, and I have to pay attention to their attacks while grabbing power ups that can improve my chances of surviving. I enjoyed the arcade style structure because it gives me a clear goal during every run. There is also a nice sense of momentum as I clear planets and unlock more opportunities to keep pushing forward. The upgrade system gives the game some extra depth. I can use resources earned from playing to improve things such as my ship's health and damage, which makes repeat attempts feel worthwhile. I liked that progression because a difficult section can eventually become more manageable after I have invested in my ship. The different ship styles are a nice bonus too, even though customization is not the main focus. Exploration Mode is another feature I enjoyed because it gives me something to do once I have worked through the main campaign stages. The endless structure works well for chasing higher scores and earning more rewards, and I liked the idea of encountering enemies and bosses that I might not have seen during a normal run. Online cooperative play also gives the game another reason to return to it. My biggest issue is that the core gameplay can become repetitive after spending enough time with it. The basic loop is always about moving forward, shooting enemies, collecting power ups and improving my ship, so eventually I wanted more variety in the encounters. The presentation is colorful and pleasant, but it still has a fairly strong mobile arcade feeling that may not appeal to everyone playing on PC. I also think the progression systems are more useful for extending the arcade loop than creating a truly deep RPG experience. I enjoyed improving my ship, but I never felt like I was building a hugely different character from one attempt to another. That is not necessarily a problem because the game is clearly aiming for fast action rather than complicated strategy, but it does limit how much depth I can get from it. Overall, Asteroid Forward is a solid free space shooter that delivers exactly the kind of straightforward arcade action I was expecting. I liked the fast combat, power ups, ship upgrades and endless mode, while cooperative play gives the experience a little more variety. It can become repetitive and the PC presentation feels somewhat basic, but the core gameplay is enjoyable enough that I had a good time blasting my way through the galaxy. Rating: 6.6/10
