What a journey to the origins of the Assasin's Creed series. Even though I finished the game, I can't really recommend it. First issue appeared right after instalation - game instantly crashed after starting. After few fanmade patches it finally ran. But then further problems showed. First - you have to remember to launch the game only with the vsync enabled. Second - it turns out the game doesn't have subtitles, which was quite annoying. Some dialogues are quite quiet, making it difficult to hear and understand what characters are saying. Fortunately I managed to find another fanmade patch for this online. In the term of gameplay - the game is incredibly repetitive and lacks variety. By the end I was exhausted and eagerly awaiting the story finale. It was nice to learn the story of the Assasin's origins and Altair's rise, but at what cost...
When I first played *Assassin's Creed* back in 2007, I thought I was playing an assassin game. After replaying it today, I realized I had missed the point almost entirely. Yes, the gameplay can become repetitive, and yes, its age shows in places. The hands are blocky, some character models are stiff, and a few animations haven't aged gracefully. But I was genuinely surprised by how immersive the world still feels. More importantly, I was surprised by how much of the game exists beneath the surface. Visually, it holds up far better than I expected. Not because of raw graphical fidelity, but because of its art direction. Damascus, Acre, and Jerusalem each have a distinct atmosphere, the architecture feels authentic, and Altaïr's movement still has a deliberate weight that makes parkour feel grounded rather than automated. The game trusts its world enough to let you exist in it. What surprised me most, though, wasn't the visuals—it was the writing. As a teenager, I mostly followed the missions. This time, I listened. The original *Assassin's Creed* isn't simply about eliminating targets. Every assassination is a philosophical conversation. The people you're sent to kill aren't cartoon villains; they're individuals who genuinely believe they're creating a better world through order and control. By the end, I wasn't convinced the Assassins were unquestionably right either. The game intentionally leaves you in an uncomfortable space where neither side fully owns the truth. That ambiguity is one of its greatest strengths. Replaying it now, with a greater appreciation for history, philosophy, and religious traditions, I also found the game's alternate-history premise far more compelling than I remembered. Rather than treating miracles, legends, and famous historical figures at face value, it reimagines them through the lens of advanced precursor technology. References to Adam and Eve, the Pieces of Eden, and even historical figures become part of a much larger fictional narrative that asks fascinating questions about power, memory, and the stories civilizations tell about themselves. What impressed me most is that the game constantly encourages skepticism. Lucy tells Desmond that much of what he knows has been shaped by Templar misinformation, but the game doesn't stop there. It quietly pushes you to question everyone: the Templars, the Assassins, Al Mualim, Abstergo, and even the memories you're reliving. It's a story about competing narratives rather than simple heroes and villains. That feels remarkably relevant today. Whether discussing institutions, history, or ideology, *Assassin's Creed* is less interested in giving answers than in asking who gets to define the truth. Those themes resonate differently now than they did when the game first released. Looking back, I think the original *Assassin's Creed* has been unfairly remembered as "the repetitive one before II." Mechanically, later entries improve almost everything. But this first game possesses something unique that the series gradually moved away from: restraint. It wants you to observe, to listen, and to think. I came back expecting a nostalgic action game. Instead, I found one of the most thoughtful uses of history, philosophy, and conspiracy fiction I've experienced in a video game. If you've only played it once—or if it's been years since your last visit—I think it's worth another look. You might discover, like I did, that the game has been quietly saying much more than you remembered.
Nothing Felt Like This Back Then

I first heard about Assassin's Creed through someone I knew who was really into parkour. I always thought parkour was incredibly cool and even tried it myself for a while. Then he told me about this game where you could freely climb buildings and move across rooftops in a world set during the Crusades. That immediately caught my attention. What really sold me on it was the Animus. Even before AC1, I had wondered how fascinating it would be if you could somehow see or relive the memories of your ancestors. Then this game came along and turned that exact idea into its whole story. I thought that was brilliant. Once I started playing, I was completely into it. The setting was perfect for me. The Middle East during the Crusades felt different from anything else I had played, and the whole Assassin idea fit into it incredibly well. I also liked how the game mixed real history with its own mystery around the Animus and the artifacts. Even the combat felt new at the time, especially the counters and the brutal kill animations. The main problem is how repetitive it gets. Before most assassinations you keep doing very similar missions and after a while it becomes exhausting. The idea of investigating your target first is actually good, but there just wasn't enough variety. Still, AC1 is the game that made me love the series. The atmosphere, setting and whole concept behind it were something completely new to me back then.

A game I will always remember.
This back in the mid to late 2000's was one of those games I found most interesting in terms of concept. Is it still worth a look today? Yes, the parkour is still fantastic, the core concept and setting is still great. Set during the Crusades with cities like Acre, Dalmascus and Jerusalem make for a great setting. There are drawbacks, gathering info prior to the Assassination is very repetitive though the PC version does have a bigger variance vs the console versions. The Assassinations themselves are brilliant especially if you are able to get it done clean. For those looking to 100%, the game has a lot of collectables and it will get annoying to 100% that file for essentially no reward, something fixed in the sequels. The major one is to get the game to boot without any mods, this requires you switch off your wifi or ethernet in the settings, not difficult but the only way to play with steam features in play and it is single player only, so this is fine. Or and I did this while collecting the collectables, you can go to the gear icon on steam go down to browse local files and boot it from one of 3 launchers in the root file, it will boot while online but will not connect to steam, I used this to play windowed mode while collecting the collectables so i could watch youtube on the side. alt and enter at the same time will flip between windowed and full screen. The normal way of booting will make the game attempt to connect to old Ubisoft Connect servers that don't exist and it will freeze on the logo. Overall I still enjoyed the campaign all these years later, I like the modern day story and I like Altair's character and voice actor (yes I thought the actor did a good job and he should not be replaced should a remake come in the future) it has it's issues but is a good starting point for the series. It says 2.6 hours played because I played mostly offline and now it's online it's not counting it and on a 1st boot it did let me play for awhile and that's where that time comes from, in reality I've put in over 20 hours completing my save. PS: The game does have controller support for Xbox 360 controllers, not mentioned on steam but go into settings in game and the option is there. To get my ps5 controller to work I have DualsenseCompanion app that converts it to Xbox 360 inputs.
ENGLISH REVIEW:
So, I would have written a decent review of this game if I’d actually been able to play it, but alas. To be honest, I’m used to older games running poorly on modern hardware and only after a lot of trouble, but this is a completely different case. Right now, no matter what I do, no matter how many patches I apply or what additional files I download it refuses to launch at all, and even if by some miracle it does launch, it freezes up like crazy. I’ve tried many different methods, but none of them have helped. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3443227501 I respect the Assassin’s Creed series, since I first discovered it way back in my childhood and still enjoy playing through the various installments; I had just decided to do a marathon of the series from the first game to the end, but I ran into this problem. In any case, I played through the first game as a kid, so it’s not a big loss, but of course, the situation is unpleasant. Either way, I’ll continue playing through the series in order; as I’ve already noted, I haven’t had these kinds of problems with the second game, and I hope I won’t have them in the future either. I won’t be evaluating the game from a technical standpoint, but I’ll rate it based on gameplay and story from memory. Overall score: 6/10.
Nothing is true, but not everything is permitted. I wish I could say that this game is an easy recommendation, but I am afraid it has aged like spoiled curd more than milk. There are some aspects of the game that are worth going for if you want to experience a humble beginning, but man, it's so repetitive and has so much friction with just having fun. The Good: Excellent vibe, great philosophical story, very underrated Arabic and Crusader setting & decent parkour with a minor skill ceiling. The Bad: Extremely repetitive, no achievement, and a lot of collectibles that are not tracked by the game, so good luck if you miss one. The last act ruins the pacing. If I were writing this review when the game came out, it would be a solid 7/10, but as of writing the review, it's a 5/10. I am afraid this game is only for hardcore fans.
