I understand why people didn't love it when it came out, especially after the Ezio trilogy. It completely changed the formula, and when you're coming directly from Assassin's Creed II, Brotherhood, and Revelations, the difference is huge. But honestly, I think a lot of the hate is undeserved. The setting is one of the biggest strengths. Colonial America feels completely different from Renaissance Italy, and exploring the forests, frontier, cities, and villages gives the game its own identity. It's not as beautiful as the Italian cities from the Ezio games, but the wilderness and atmosphere are fantastic. And then there's Connor and Haytham. Connor is a much more serious and reserved protagonist than Ezio, which is probably another reason some players struggled to connect with him, but his story is interesting and his relationship with Haytham is one of the best parts of the game. Haytham, in particular, is an incredible character and immediately makes the story more interesting. The gameplay also changed completely from the Ezio trilogy. The combat is faster and more brutal, parkour was redesigned for the wilderness, and the game introduced new mechanics that made it feel very different. I think a lot of the criticism came simply from expecting another Ezio game. It isn't perfect. The pacing can be strange, the opening takes too long, and some parts of the story could have been handled better. But underneath those flaws is a genuinely good Assassin's Creed game that tried to do something different.
This is a lot of fun. I play on PC with a keyboard and mouse and it's all good except for the encounters with the wild animals and the random required keys. That part is annoying without a controler but I manage.
