The game that created the cinematique platformer genre, or at least popularized it. Another World (or Out of this world in USA), is just one incredible experiment that was unrivaled back then. You play as Lester, a scientist who portals himself to an alien world. The game is exploring and escaping from all the hazards and enemies that get in your way, while trying to understand the alien technology. The visuals are painted vectors, giving a very unique atmosphere in an age where everything was pixel art. In the sound department, there's small synth cues but is general silent except for the plenty of sound effects. Apart from running and jumping, you quickly gain a laser gun which is crucial not only for combat, but to solve different puzzles and even breaking doors and walls down. There are a couple of sections that require lots of setup in different screens, like shutting down a power line in a room, then destroy a wall and escape from a water flood, etc. Most are fair, except for one late part where you need to destroy a non descript floor with a very unorthodox method. There's no tutorials nor any HUD at all, you just spawn in the alien world and need to figure stuff out. This was also a great mechanic choice, unheard at the time. Other future games that cemented this genre are Flashback and Heart of Darkness. Talking about this remaster, it's one of those where you can switch between newer and older graphics on the run. It removes a little pixelation and adds better lightning and more shaded colors. It's not a big change, but it's ok for modern audiences. The game is very short, with generous checkpoints you can beat it (with all the achievements) in under an hour. Still, this is the best way to play this classic. It's a shame that the obscure sequel, Heart of the Alien, for Sega CD has never been rereleased.
It was a great game back then, still great today. Great memories.
Another World proves that great storytelling doesn't need long conversations or endless cutscenes. After a scientific experiment goes horribly wrong, you're thrown into a mysterious alien world where everything is trying to kill you. The game tells its story almost entirely through animation, atmosphere, and environmental design, making every discovery feel meaningful. ⚡🛸 The cinematic presentation was years ahead of its time. Smooth animations, minimalist visuals, and almost no dialogue create an unforgettable experience that still feels unique today. Every screen is carefully designed to make you feel isolated and vulnerable. 🎬 The puzzles and platforming require observation and patience, while the action sequences create genuine tension. Escaping danger with only quick thinking and perfect timing is incredibly satisfying. 🧩🏃 Some checkpoints are unforgiving, the controls feel dated, and you'll probably die many times while learning the correct solution. But that's part of the game's classic design and charm. 💀 I expected a retro platformer... instead I found one of the most influential cinematic adventures ever made. 👏✨ Sometimes the oldest games tell the best stories. ❤️
https://youtu.be/L-h_tYFtYoc Redressing a classic old game with a fresh coat of paint is not enough to modernize this title due to control and logic issues.
I can't even imagine how the people of 1991 could possibly have felt upon being gifted with this work of art. It may well be the very first video game to which I would attribute such a moniker.
8/10
Its almost unplayable in 2026, but who am I to argue with history. The gaming World owes everything to Another World.
