Reviews
Игра от создателей DUSK, не понравилась, уровни не очень симпатичные, враги тоже, рубилово вроде бы и ничего, но не очень хочется в это играть. Не рекомендую, лучше в DUSK. С пушками в любом случае веселее, чем с мечами.
Overall, a great FPS game with a nice-looking art style and satisfying shooting. Instead of using your usual weapons, you are using maces, axes, or staffs to shoot magic projectiles at a huge variety of enemies. The game is not trying to be something unique and does not need to be at all. Simply put, an excellent Shooter if you are looking for something more grounded.

Amid Evil takes place after evil has already won. The once peaceful denizens and holy orders of many dimensions have been overcome and twisted by some great corruption that has succeeded in besting the very gods. You represent the last hope for these shattered worlds, the champion of the Black Labyrinth. Wielding its divine axe, you go forth to cleanse the corrupted vestiges of the old order of evil and liberate the realms. In this nu-boomer-shooter, those realms take front and center. If there's one thing to get into Amid Evil for, it's the level and visual design. The action takes place across many wondrous worlds, through sprawling ruins, dilapidated temples, and forgotten machines, some grounded and terrestrial and others sprawling with root-like tendrils into the kaleidoscope colors of the cosmos. Amid Evil takes the many disparate and familiar elements in its visual and level design and recombines them into something all its own. The low-poly models and low-resolution textures share the canvas with incredible skyboxes, intricate level geometry, and gorgeous detailed weapon sprites, and everything is utilized perfectly to create something evocative and more than the sum of its part. Each level ups the ante, ascending beyond high fantasy into celestial fantasy, expanding on traditional boomshoot mini-mazes with more intricate mechanisms and fantastical platforming set pieces, and it all culminates in a satisfyingly creative final area. Carving your way thru these corrupted realms is made exceedingly enjoyable by the arsenal of magic weapons at your disposal. A machine-gunning magic staff, a mace that launches crystals that pins enemies to walls, a rocket launcher that fires entire planets... All these bizarre and powerful weapons make you truly feel like a guns-blazing crusader ready to take on the eldritch deep. The weapons are beautifully rendered with incredibly detailed sprites that have dynamic lighting, and the soul mode you can attain from killing enough enemies adds another layer to the power fantasy with deeply overpowered enhancements to every weapon capable of clearing whole rooms with ease. If there's one thing that is a bit lacking in Amid Evil, it's the difficulty of the enemy and boss encounters. I played thru the whole game on Hard, and until the final levels, the game barely posed a challenge. Enemies are often not numerous enough, threatening enough on their own, or in suitable level geometry to threaten a player. Even when the difficulty ramps up, health pickups and ammunition are so plentiful that it drops right back down. I recall many times that the game would throw a massive squad of mixed enemies at me, and I'd respond by firing the game's equivalent to the BFG and just kill them all because I had like 20 BFG shots lying around due to all the ammo for it everywhere. The bosses are especially nonthreatening and typically can be beaten by moving a certain way repeatedly or sometimes even by standing totally still. This isn't enough to hurt the fun of the game, as the levels remain fun to blast through and many of the bosses are great visual setpieces or have great gimmicks, but it does hold the game back from being one of the greats. Overall, Amid Evil is recommended for a fun time cleaning up evil across the vibrant cosmos with your helicoptering axe.
I don't understand Amid Evil's acclaim. I find Amid Evil's levels to be big and empty, its combat to be bland, and its weapons and enemies to be forgettable. There are elements that are cool, such as the transforming level geometry, but even with that I'm jaded by modern DOOM II maps which perform far more impressive level morphing.
I played the first two chapters of Amid Evil two years ago, and dropped it because I was bored. I still had it on my SSD and gave it another shot only to remember how mediocre this game is. It is not bad, but it is very uninspired. The strategy in every room in the game through three chapters is to circle strafe. That is the entire game, circle strafing. Utterly boring. I am surprised at the overall good reception. However it mostly looks dishonest. Only 23% of players have beaten chapter 3. And even half of those people drop the game before finishing, like I'm about to. That tells me that the vast majority of players agree with my assessment that the game is incredibly boring. 4/10 from a player that still thinks Doom 1993 Doom 2 Duke Nukem 3D and Quake 2 are great FPS and fun to this day. This game is not well designed.
I was always really into Heretic though and AE hits all the same notes while having plenty of original flavor. The arsenal of weapons are unique and interesting and the levels are wonderfully themed and imaginative. Not all of them are winners, especially if you don't love 3D platforming, but taken as a whole there is a great amount of quality content here that perfectly encapsulates why the core gameplay of those early fps games holds up to this day.
The game starts badly and feels boring, resembling a Serious Sam copy. However, as you progress, the levels become more complex with improved art style and game design. It seems the developers quickly improved and became very skilled during the creation of the game. The final part of the game is amazing, featuring a surreal and fractal-like map design. Overall, I really enjoyed the game and its DLC, and I would recommend it to Quake fans.
It just doesn't feel like something that New Blood would make. I've played just about every game that New Blood has had a hand in since Dusk, and I have NEVER been disappointed until I played AMID EVIL. The good? This game is beautiful. Honestly, this looks better than most AAA titles that come out today, and it runs significantly better. I've only have one freeze, but that was after letting it sit paused for a prolonged period of time. The enemy design is nice. Each zone completely changes the enemies, so you go from fighting basic knight-type enemies in one zone to fighting Celestial Monstrosities beyond human comprehension in another. It changes up frequently enough to keep you from getting bored of shooting the same exact bullet sponges from level to level. The soundtrack is a banger. It's not Dusk level, in my opinion, but it gets the job done. The bad? Playing through this, it feels like there was zilch in terms of communication between the teams that made this, and by that, I mean: Whoever designed the weapons failed to give them any punch, whoever designed the enemies gave them too much health, whoever designed the levels didn't think about the fact that we have no parry, dodge, etc to protect ourselves and made each level a series of narrow corridors that lead to arena sections (which are still extremely small when compared to other games with arena shooting sections) with 20 enemies that can hit you 5 times before you can hit them once. The platforming feels abysmal, as you have no sense of momentum. It's very easy to fall off the narrow ledges that they designed (which most of the time you have no choice but to go on because it's the actual path you're supposed to take) and have to do it all over again. The enemy AI is (somehow) even more intelligent than the AI for Ready or Not. And by that, I mean you will be, attacked from all angles before you even know what's happening, be shot by things from halfway across the map that you can't even SEE, and you will think they're dead but they'll stand up and stab you in the chest 34 times and overkill you. If you've never heard of New Blood or you're new to gaming in general, try out something like Dusk before you go into AMID EVIL (If you choose to pick this one up at all). You'll actually get to see how good of a game these guys can make, and this one will just leave a sour first impression. Edit: It's honestly so bad that I really wish I could refund it. Do with that what you will.
Level design is by far the weakest aspect of this game, it gets downright obnoxious at some point due to how confusing some levels get. Other than that, it's a blast overall.
