Almohadin: escape from the basement is a fast-paced 2D precision platformer that combines old-school arcade difficulty with bullet-hell action, colorful cartoon presentation, and an intentionally absurd sense of humor. Developed and published by Talio Games, the game builds its identity around challenging movement while adding combat, bosses, rescue objectives, unusual power-ups, competitive stages, and story sequences. Instead of treating its basement setting as the foundation for a dark horror experience, it embraces comedy and eccentricity, resulting in an adventure that looks cheerful even when its platforming demands considerable accuracy and persistence. The premise immediately demonstrates the game's unusual personality. Almohadin is a pillow that inexplicably comes to life and decides to escape from the basement where he has been confined. Reaching the outside world is not straightforward, as the basement contains mysteries, dangerous creatures, prisoners, and increasingly difficult obstacles. Story Mode presents this journey through a succession of stages with progressively greater difficulty, accompanied by visual novel-style narrative sequences. This gives the campaign more context than a conventional arcade platformer where stages exist primarily as mechanical challenges. Almohadin's search for freedom provides a simple central motivation, while the mysteries of the basement create reasons to continue exploring. Precision platforming remains the most important part of the experience. The game takes inspiration from difficult retro side-scrolling arcade titles, so success depends heavily on controlling movement accurately and learning how each stage works. Early challenges establish the fundamentals before later sections demand better reactions, timing, positioning, and familiarity with hazards. Players should therefore expect failure to be part of progression. Difficult sequences encourage repeated attempts until their patterns become understandable and the necessary movements become almost instinctive. This philosophy makes Almohadin particularly suitable for players who enjoy improving through practice rather than progressing through an adventure with minimal resistance. Bullet-hell elements make these platforming challenges considerably more chaotic. Players are not always dealing with predictable environmental obstacles because hostile creatures and powerful bosses introduce attacks that must also be avoided. Boss encounters emphasize survival and pattern recognition, forcing Almohadin to remain mobile while responding to increasingly dangerous situations. The combination works because platforming and combat demand related skills. Reading the environment, anticipating danger, positioning correctly, and reacting quickly are important regardless of whether the threat comes from a platforming hazard or an enemy attack. The adventure also offers objectives beyond simply reaching the end of each stage. Hundreds of subjects are supposedly imprisoned throughout the basement, giving Almohadin opportunities to rescue them during his journey. Other areas emphasize eliminating monsters and cleansing locations that have become infested. These objectives broaden the protagonist's role from a character merely attempting to escape into someone gradually affecting the strange world around him. They also provide useful variety by changing the immediate purpose of individual encounters. One of the game's most entertaining ideas is its assortment of upgrades and special mechanics. Conventional weapons and invincibility potions appear alongside much stranger tools. Alfajores improve Almohadin's movement, teleportation pills introduce additional mobility possibilities, and cans of beans somehow allow the living pillow to fly. The ridiculous explanations are entirely consistent with the game's comedic personality. More importantly, these abilities can alter traversal and combat, ensuring that the platforming does not depend exclusively on the same basic actions throughout the entire campaign. New movement possibilities can make later situations feel mechanically distinct while reinforcing the game's unpredictable tone. Separate game modes place greater emphasis on speed and mastery. Certain levels challenge players to finish as quickly as possible and compare their performance with other players through competitive systems and leaderboards. This is a natural extension of precision platforming. Completing a difficult stage is initially satisfying, but completing it efficiently creates an entirely different challenge. Players can study routes, eliminate unnecessary movements, reduce mistakes, and repeatedly attempt stages in pursuit of faster results. Some of these challenges are deliberately described as extremely difficult, making them more appropriate for dedicated players than those interested only in experiencing the main adventure. The colorful visual direction helps distinguish Almohadin from platformers that use difficulty as an excuse for an intimidating or relentlessly serious atmosphere. Its cartoon appearance, cute protagonist, comedy, and strange items create a lighthearted surface around demanding mechanics. That contrast is important to its character. Being repeatedly defeated by a difficult obstacle feels different when the surrounding world contains magical pillows, bizarre consumables, monsters, and intentionally silly ideas. The humor does not remove the challenge, but it prevents the adventure from feeling unnecessarily oppressive. Replayability is supported by its difficult optional stages, speed-focused modes, leaderboards, Steam achievements, and emphasis on improving performance. The game includes 86 achievements, giving completion-oriented players additional objectives beyond simply reaching the conclusion. Steam Cloud support is also included. Its relatively modest system requirements make the game accessible to lower-end computers, while support for interface text and subtitles across numerous languages expands its accessibility to an international audience. As a free-to-play release, it also carries little financial barrier for players curious about whether its demanding platforming style suits them. The primary limitation is ultimately inseparable from the game's greatest strength. Players who dislike repetition, precision platforming, demanding boss patterns, or repeatedly attempting difficult sections may find the experience frustrating. The cute appearance should not be mistaken for an indication of casual difficulty. Almohadin expects players to learn from mistakes and become more capable through repetition. For the intended audience, however, overcoming a sequence that previously seemed impossible can provide exactly the sense of achievement that makes challenging platformers satisfying. Overall, Almohadin: escape from the basement is a surprisingly ambitious mixture of precision platforming, bullet-hell action, visual novel storytelling, comedy, boss encounters, rescue missions, unusual upgrades, and competitive challenges. Talio Games gives the game a recognizable personality through the absurd concept of a living pillow attempting to escape a mysterious basement, but there is enough mechanical substance behind that joke to prevent it from becoming a novelty alone. Its progressively demanding stages and optional competitive content make it best suited to players who enjoy persistence and mechanical mastery, while its colorful presentation keeps the experience energetic and approachable. For fans of difficult indie platformers who appreciate eccentric humor alongside serious challenges, it offers an entertaining and distinctive escape attempt. Rating: 7/10

Should you play it? Maybe, considering it's free, the decision is easier to make, but I recommend that you already enjoy games like Geometry Dash. This game is a precision platformer with a wide variety of enemies and perks to help you progress. In the campaign, the goal is to learn the basics (this is just the beginning), and then there are the tryhard modes (speedrun/no hit) where even more mechanics are introduced. It's a very ambitious project that was completed but could have been bigger if it had received more support (the dev is willing to keep updating it anyway, according to what he said on the discord server). It would have been great to see it with more game modes and many more levels. Even so, it apparently offers over 20 hours of playtime to finish all the content. And over 50 if you want to master it. This is the reality of Steam's hidden gems: developers don't make a living off this and can't afford to spend years on the same project. That's what Talio Dev did, creating his second game (TEKO), a Roguelike Deckbuilder; I sincerely hope it does much better, he deserves it. His style is great, and his motto of reinventing subgenres is brilliant. I love it. Thanks to this game, I discovered him.
Almohadin: Escape from the Basement
