Sadly, as much as I want to recommend this game, I can't in it's current state. The controls seem odd, but I figured I'd just adjust them. However there is no customize option. So I used the steam overlay to reassign them. Once I got everything working I progressed forward. Cut-scenes seem forced as I couldn't find a way to skip them, something I always do when testing out functionality. (I go back as rewatch them after about 15 to 20 of minutes of play). I made it to the part where it says it is a month later and that's when I lost all view movement. The mouse, track-pad, nor the joystick on a controller would offer any movement to pan my view, despite it working fine in the starting area just moments ago. I tried reassigning it in the steam overlay but nothing would fix it. I figured I'd just reload. However there is only an auto-save system, no manual save slots. So when I clicked play again from the main menu, to my surprised the game started over again at the beginning, which means waiting through the cut-scenes again. Once through my second attempt, view movement continued to function this time. However my character movement would often, seemingly randomly, become painfully slow, like I was moving through molasses. The run speed isn't so bad but I wish that speed was the walk speed and run was faster. Run doesn't help though when general movement get really slow. And that's not a frame-rate issue or processor slowdown, I checked. Oh and view movement is really fast, that was another thing I had to slow way down in the Steam overlay, something I wish was an option in the control settings. Collision is very odd. lots of invisible boundaries when one would not expect them. Often times wall collision doesn't match up with what you see, especially on rocky alcoves and cliff edges. This can result in clipping issues. Stairs have a slow automated ascension but you can still move on them, often sliding off to the side if you don't let go Y-axis inversion is another thing sorely misses. No option for this either so again I used the Steam overlay to solve this. The downside is that now all mouse movement is inverted in the menus and when using the cursor to select/take items. So I have to use a separate setting for the track-pad to not be inverted and switch over to that for cursor movement. Something that would easily be solved with just a standard y-axis view movement inversion option. I'd also like to have the button that opens the pause menu also close it so that I don't have to switch to the track-pad to select "back to game" every-time. I also couldn't get the "Press 'Q' to activate" message to go away once I passed through a door the second time that I had recently opened. The visuals are excellent as are the sound effects. I do believe this will be a great game once fully customize control options are added as some further QA testing is done. I'll revisit this review at that time to update it..

A promising opening chapter that echoes classic first-person adventure games without resorting to overly complex solutions. The story appears to be quite engaging, however there is a lot thrown at you right away. It feels like you start in the middle and are expected to know everything that has happened before. However, after the first introductory scenes, you're on your own. Everything must be grasped through observation of the environment, listening to recorded logs, or reading books. This approach is appealing since it allows you to interpret things on your own. The gameplay is a first-person adventure game that emphasizes exploration and experience. You find yourself in a strange planet with no idea what to do. There are no checkpoints or goals. You can explore the landscape, rummage through the homes of previous tenants, click on bizarre machines that don't appear to accomplish anything, and so on. The environment has been abandoned, and encountering a living person with whom you can communicate is rare. But this doesn’t mean that the game’s world is dead. Despite the rocky terrain, there are a variety of plants and animals living here, and they are not always friendly. While it is possible to die, this occurs only in extremely rare circumstances. Death only comes from spiders that function more like a barrier, keeping you from venturing to areas you shouldn't. The mouse is used for interaction. The cursor will change color if something is important. Because there’s usually no visible feedback from your actions, you will need to wander about constantly to see if anything has changed from the previous time you inspected something. It's a fantastic atmosphere and feeling when you find something that works. Since this is just the first chapter, some of the implemented mechanics are not used. I'm referring to the intriguing commands you may now find under control options. One is for transferring your soul to a wolf. Although you encounter a wolf in this chapter, your can’t do anything with it. The graphics are just decent. They do a nice job of crafting a strange planet, but it’s nothing spectacular. It appears to have become stuck a few years ago, with basic textures and a lack of any details. The main character, for example, has a face that seems to be made of plastic. Even the world appears monotonous, with only the bare necessities. On the other hand, the game aims to enhance the atmosphere with small details that are easy to overlook. When you glance up on the rock, you'll notice a bird watching you. When you peek out the window and notice a figure wandering in the river. It’s little things like that. Bugs are unavoidable when playing an indie game, especially a first-person title that focuses on aesthetics. While some glitches, such as a pipe cutting through a wall or missing textures, are harmless, I came across one that broke the game. When I jumped and investigated a flying insect, the game got stuck in the examination screen and I was unable to exit.
Great first impressions on this one! I love the atmosphere depicted within the screens I was seeing shared from this game, and was very much looking forward to jumping in upon release! Finally, it's here, and I've enjoyed my first steps into this mysterious world ... I love the fact the credits play at the start of the game. They definitely get the game pumping with a great music and visuals! I found the intro scenes to be very interesting, bringing a slightly darker quality to the otherwise Myst-style atmosphere found within. The sound fx and voice acting work really well alongside the enthralling musical score to help captivate you as traverse through the world. Really love the chants - got big Dune vibes from this! I think the walk and run features could have been a bit faster. So far, it's been really cool seeing how vast the world looks! I look forward to exploring more, and believe fans of adventure and mystery will find something in 'A Whisper in the Twilight: Chapter One' :)
For some reason this launches the Steam VR app as well. There's no way to customize settings like look sensitivity or even graphics. The controls feel very squishy. Too much momentum on movement, and climbing ladders wavers from side to side in a weird way. The exposition dumping at the beginning is too much too quick and you're not sure what to do or where to go. I love puzzle games like this, but this is incredibly rough. Cannot recommend at this time.
This game is shrouded in atmosphere. I quite enjoy the exploration mixed with the nice sound. It's encouraged that you wear headphones and for good reason..the sound doesn't miss imo. Not a whole lot has happened thus far during my playthrough but a story is indeed bein' told through some pretty good voice acting and the world itself. A gem of a game right here. At 10 bucks ya can't go wrong. Recommended. Gameplay here: https://youtu.be/WnY8X2wAcKI
Only complaint on this game is its short length, looking forward to future chapters. Aside from that, the entire experience has a remarkably unique and creative storyline and atmosphere. The goals are clear but not completely linear and obvious, the puzzles are challenging but logically achieveable, and the voice acting and overall sound is truly remarkable and immersive. Hoping future expansions come soon.
An amazing story and production from this Indie developer (style of Myst). From the opening credits with its incredible graphics, music and effects (don't skip the opening), it is obvious that this developer put their heart and soul into this. I went to the Inorganic Visions web site and learned this is only the prologue to a 10 part series that the developer has planned. The sound and graphics are amazing (use headphones for the 3D effects). The story is superb, it is deep and exciting with many little details you can learn about on the people, animals and plants you will find in this world. Highly recommend! Let's all support our Indie developers like this, I look forward to the next chapters! Congrats and many thanks for sharing this story with the world!
So far this is an outstanding first installment, full of atmosphere and interesting locations. The graphics are stunning. The soundtrack is awesome. Great for players who dig the single player genre. For $10, you can't go wrong.
This review may say I've only played for 28 minutes, but that is how much I've played recently after buying the game. Full disclosure: I'm a QA for AWITT and have played Chapter 1 many times during the testing period. For his pandemic project, the developer, Max Rudy Magni, decided to turn his book The War of the Cults, into a game. This involved teaching himself Unreal Engine, and the results—apart from a few quirks like not quite getting the "save" points right, something that left us QAs cursing at times—are truly magical. The games I truly love are story strong, and AWITT is steeped in story. Several people have said that there is a lot of information to take in right from the start. This is true, but gamers will have received, along with the game, an illustrated Prologue that tells the backstory to AWITT. This Prologue adds yet one more layer to the richness of the game, as do all the journals, voice logs and character interactions you will encounter. The puzzles can be challenging, but built into solving them is the necessity of keeping your eyes and ears open at the same time as exploring every nook and cranny. And I heartily concur with all the reviewers who have lauded the look and sound of the game. There aren't any Steam "achievements" to be had in AWITT. The biggest achievement, IMO, is to fully immerse yourself into what is happening. The more you "become" Zory, the greater the impact that the end will have on you. It is well worth it, and don't forget, this is only the beginning...
