First playthrough review time. A Plague Tale: Requiem builds on the first game in many ways. I played the first game about a year and four months ago, but it was still easy to get back into this sequel. The gameplay mixes stealth, combat, exploration, and puzzles well, and the larger areas give more freedom to choose how to move forward. Exploring side paths is also useful because the extra resources help with upgrades later in the game. The difficulty is fair, and most sections become easier once you slow down instead of rushing. The story kept me interested from beginning to end, and the voice acting and cutscenes are very well done. The graphics look great throughout the game, with detailed locations that change a lot as you progress. I played on ultra settings with everything maxed out. Performance was mostly smooth throughout my playthrough, with very few stutters. The occasional stutters did not seem like a hardware issue and appeared to be related to the game itself. I also noticed the camera sometimes sticking near objects and a couple of small bugs that required a checkpoint reload, but none of them caused much lost progress. Overall, this is a very good sequel that improves on the first game while keeping the same style. The gameplay, visuals, and story are all handled well, and the technical issues are fairly minor. Since the story continues directly after the first game, it is better to play that one before starting this sequel.
This story is an absolute masterpiece! An emotional rollercoaster that was worth every minute of my time. The graphics and the gameplay were just as good. Amazing voice actors too! Unforgettable journey! No complaints at all. Made me think “finally something like TLOU games that I absolutely adore!” It is like TLOU in the best way possible, because the story doesn’t feel copied, it has its own lore and era! Shortly put, this game made me feel more human, more alive, and absolutely a lot more grateful for everything in life. I recommend it to every human and more so every being wanting to be (feel) human. Hoping to come across more gems like this! Also, yes I have played both the games and so glad I did!! Cannot wait for the third one even though I know it’s different characters, I’d still love to play it!!
The rats are on the loose again. There are more and they are smarter and faster than before. As in the predecessor, we mainly control Amicia. There are new weapons and many new ways to finish off your opponents. The places are once again breathtakingly beautiful. Both the idyllic and the gruesome ones. A few areas offer a lot to discover apart from the story. The weapon menu has been redesigned, but seems a bit more complicated to me. Our little brother can be a bit annoying at times. (that's just how little siblings are). The story is seamlessly connected and continues to follow the journey of the two siblings. https://youtu.be/az6C11c_wI8 Die Ratten sind wieder los.
Let me begin this review by stating that I really liked the first game, A Plague Tale Innocence, it was a great story with excellent pacing and character development. And it's because of this that I regret playing this game and hope to dissuade any other fan of the first from experiencing this travesty that has all the hallmarks of a bad sequel, with character-assassinating and retconning so much of what made the first game good. I adored the first game because it was medieval in the true sense of the word, where yes, there was violence and brutality but there were ALSO various social protections against violence, chivalric code, and progress being made in science and learning. There was a story and meaning to it. Requiem on the other hand, is set in ye grimdark olde dung ages, where everything revolves around violence, and superstitions, any “nice” place is secretly a filthy mass grave underneath with gore for the sake of gore and nearly everyone is a psychopath and it's all just filled with nihilism to the point it all feels meaningless in the end. There were multiple times where the game introduces an idyllic scene where it was obvious it wasn't going to last and it devolved into senseless killing, and the game does this over and over; and in the same way too, either an Uncharted-style chase sequence or the protagonist is trapped in an arena and cannot progress until she kills a horde of soldiers, only for the game to castigate her for it immediately afterwards in an incredibly unsubtle fashion. I guess the writers never read the adage “one death is a tragedy, a million a statistic”, because they seem incapable of writing a tragic scene without introducing entire crowds of innocent bystanders to get gratuitously killed off. And this game does Amicia and her companions from the first game massive disfavor, essentially butchering their character arcs and personalities from the first game (and in case of
Beatrice
, literally butchering them for cheap trauma porn and
dead mom trope
) and the new characters introduced in the sequel are no better. Most are killed off before they get a chance to do anything interesting, and whilst the inquisition in the first game were stereotypical villains, at least they were consistent and well tied together with the gameplay and worldbuilding. Meanwhile, in Requiem you get several factions, all equally infuriatingly nonsensical and incompetent as well as cartoonishly evil, and most of the new lore and concepts either just contradict or cheapens the story of the first game. And all this just to end with a tragic ending that in no way feels earned. I’m not against games with a sad ending or characters making bad or selfish decisions, I loved Clair Obscur Expedition 33 for those exact reasons, but there all characters had clear motivations and character arcs that tied together with the main theme and game world, whereas Requiem constantly requires all characters to completely change their minds and act against their own interests several times for no other reason than to force in more conflict. But perhaps its biggest sin is to shoehorn in so many horrible scenes and mass deaths the protagonists themselves caused (which in turn also makes it incredibly hard to root for them), that when the ending came, rather than feeling sad as the writers intended, I just felt desensitized to all the ridiculous catastrophes that had been happening that I just felt “well, guess it’s over now”, not devastated, not crying, just an angry disappointment at the writers for making a story that’s nothing other than a long cavalcade of cheap emotional shots with no real progress or meaning at the end.
