404Sight is a free game made in support of net neutrality. It’s a 3D playground runner influenced by parkour running with the addition of a special ping ability that reveals areas that can speed the player up or slow them down.

404Sight is a short free parkour game built around a pretty unusual idea. I am running through futuristic levels while trying to reach the end as quickly as possible, but the game keeps throwing obstacles in my way through the internet service provider theme. The main character has a special ping ability that reveals hidden parts of the course, including areas that speed me up and areas that slow me down. I like the idea because the net neutrality message is actually part of the gameplay instead of just being something written in the background. The running itself is simple but quite enjoyable. I am constantly moving, jumping and trying to pick the best route through each level, and using the ping at the right time can make a noticeable difference. The fast and slow lanes give me something to think about because I cannot always see the best route immediately. There are also hazards and inhibitors that can mess with my progress, so getting through a level quickly is partly about knowing when to take risks and when to play it safe. I also like the futuristic presentation. The game has a cyberpunk style that fits the whole idea of a world controlled by huge internet companies, and the soundtrack gives the running a bit more energy. The levels are not massive, but they are designed around getting from one point to another quickly, so I am encouraged to learn the routes and improve my times. There are also 19 achievements, which gives me some extra things to work towards once I have finished the basic levels. The biggest problem for me is that there simply is not a huge amount of game here. The main concept is interesting, but once I understand the ping system and get used to the movement, there is only so much more it can do with that idea. I can replay the levels to improve my routes and times, but the experience is clearly designed to be short. I think that is fine for a free game, although I would have liked more level variety and more advanced parkour mechanics to give the movement some extra depth. I also think the game shows its age in places. It was released back in 2015 and some of the visuals, movement and general presentation feel like they come from that period. The idea itself still works, but it does not have the smoothness or polish I would expect from a newer parkour game. There are also some older PC requirements and technical quirks that can make the experience less straightforward on modern systems. That does not completely ruin it for me, but it is something I have to take into account when judging the game today. What I appreciate most is that 404Sight actually has a reason to exist beyond being another free runner. The net neutrality theme gives the game a clear identity, and the idea of being slowed down by an ISP while using a ping to find faster routes is a clever way of turning that subject into something I can understand through gameplay. It is not a complicated political simulation and it does not need to be. The message is simple, and the game gets it across without completely forgetting that it is supposed to be fun. Overall, 404Sight is a neat little experiment that I think is worth checking out because it is free and has a genuinely different idea behind its parkour gameplay. I like the fast movement, hidden routes, ping mechanic and cyberpunk presentation, and I think the net neutrality theme works surprisingly well with the mechanics. The short length, dated presentation and limited depth stop it from reaching the higher ratings I give to more complete games, but I still think it does enough with its concept to be memorable. It is the sort of small game I can finish without a huge time commitment and still remember because of the idea behind it. Rating: 7.6/10

A fun little platformer that isn't too difficult and quite quick to complete
