3on3 FreeStyle: Rebound is a free to play street basketball game that focuses on fast 3 versus 3 matches. I control one player on the court while two teammates handle the other positions, and the matches are much more arcade focused than a serious basketball simulation. I like that I can jump into a game fairly quickly and start learning the basics without needing to understand a huge amount of complicated basketball tactics. The actual gameplay is probably the best part for me. Passing, shooting, blocking, stealing and dribbling all feel fairly straightforward to pick up, but there is still a decent amount to learn once I start playing against better competition. Every character has their own skills and playstyle, so choosing the right character for how I want to play makes a noticeable difference. Teamwork is also really important. I cannot just run around trying to score every possession because the other team can punish me pretty quickly if I leave my position. Passing the ball, setting up plays and making sure I am defending properly can make a much bigger difference than simply trying to get the most points myself. When everyone on the court is actually working together, the matches can be really fun. I also like that there is more to do now than just online 3 versus 3. There is a 1 versus 1 competitive mode, a training mode and a newer Career Mode with stage based progression and roguelike elements. The Career Mode gives me something more relaxed to work through when I do not want to immediately jump into competitive matches. The biggest problem for me is the free to play progression. There are a lot of character upgrades, items and other systems surrounding the actual basketball, and the game has in game purchases as well as chance based purchases. I can play without spending money, but I sometimes feel like there are too many things competing for my attention outside of the actual matches. The character progression can also make the game feel more demanding than I expect from an arcade basketball game. Learning the controls is one thing, but getting the most out of a character means understanding their skills and improving them over time. I like having something to work towards, although it can make getting into the game feel a little overwhelming at first. The visuals have also been improved with Unreal Engine Lumen, which gives the courts better lighting and reflections. I like the colourful street basketball style, although the character designs and overall presentation are still quite exaggerated. It fits the game well because this is clearly more about flashy moves and fast matches than trying to look like a real basketball broadcast. Overall, 3on3 FreeStyle: Rebound is a fun arcade basketball game that I enjoy most when I am focused on playing as part of a team. The fast matches, different characters and skill based gameplay give it plenty of personality, while the progression systems and monetisation can make the overall experience more complicated than it needs to be. I still think the core basketball is good enough to make it worth trying, especially since I can play it for free. Rating: 7.3/10
