Really gripping and extremely well done – I loved every detail, especially the plot twists and the music. I’d definitely recommend it!
This is such an amazingly told story with some simple, yet pretty, art! [strike] RIP to the artist who drew every single one of the 2000+ illistrations [/strike] The aesthetic really brought back the nostalgia, not only with the setting and the visuals, but also some of the items we interact with! Meanwhile the story was a great read and I love how creative it got with the text on screen using ren'py!
Pure ‘90s nostalgia: an interactive comic with major Goonies vibes! I just started 1997 RELOADED and it is absolutely brilliant. It captures the exact feeling of the adventure stories I used to make up as a kid. The opening somehow reminded me of The Goonies and Stand by Me—two iconic movies for my generation that, for me, are the very definition of adventure and coming-of-age drama. Here we have three kids digging up in the past, accidentally bumping into a mystery which promises to be bigger than anything they’ve ever dreamt. What initially caught my eye in the trailers—and looks even better in-game—is the unique art style. It’s a refreshing break from the usual 3D graphics or standard anime-style visual novels. The flat, 2D images with thick black outlines look just like a comic book, and the digital coloring is beautiful. Having the dialogues inside actual speech balloons makes it feel like playing through an interactive comic. While the game isn't voiced, the immersive sound design perfectly sets the mood and makes you feel right there in the room with the characters. A standout feature for me is the answering machine player; listening to the messages adds such a realistic, tangible touch to the world. Right at the beginning, you face a crucial choice that lets you hear a message from two different perspectives: through Marco or Federico. Both are Italians abroad, but Marco's fluent English gives you a clearer understanding, while Federico’s version made me laugh hard. It’s an intriguing mechanic that immediately sucks you into the story. And introduces you to the characters in a funny way. It’s an incredible experience so far! Highly recommended!
Food for Thought
I'm gonna be real here, I feel my review will either be a constructive thought or no thought put into it what so ever because I just did not care for this game. Is sad for me to say it because I played some graphic novel games that got me at least hook me to finish at the end before giving my thoughts, this one did not manage me fully grab my attention to the end as of writing this review. I was like mid chapter 4 of this game and I was just completely bored. I tried to like it, but the main issue I have with this game is that the story was not interesting in the slightest, the characters I do not care for them and always forget the characters names whenever I return back to the game. Is a murder mystery game, it should be interesting but I kept asking myself why do the kids want to solve a murder mystery of a dead singer? Like where is the motivation behind it? Did I skip something? Why should I actually care about these kids, there lies the issue. It felt the characters want to do a Scooby-Doo or Stand By Me adventure where they just wanna solve a case together, I just did not care any of these characters because all of them aren't appealing to me from their personality they showed. The Italian kid who half of the times speak Italian and I have to look over the translation the game provided, but sometimes there are English subtitles that the game provided which idk why it switch back and forth doing it as if I'm doing this Italian lesson plan. The artwork is unique I don't wanna knock down the artist who made all of this, it really have shown the artist put lots of work putting these scenes together, but idk. To me it didn't appeal to me, maybe is not my style to enjoy, I'm trying to remember a similar style that in the 90s people do use that particular style like in music CD or in those 90s website cover, is interesting, but overall it did not help my eyes to be engage with the environment, especially the text boxes, it felt lazy, there isn't like some "engagement" or the font that please my eyes that's another issue I have. The only actual positive I have for this game is the music, if I have a choice between buying this game or the game's soundtrack if they provide I would get the soundtrack instead, because who ever is the singer or compose these music I just sat on my chair for 10 mins listening in these tracks. Very beautiful, I would skip these scenes just to hear another track and go back to the menu and listen to it. I might try to finish the game just to unlock more of its soundtracks. I know I am I sound I'm batching the game, it isn't "bad" in like gameplay and I can't really say the story is bad since I have not finish it, I just lost the drive to care about the story, maybe some people will like it because of that "vibe" it gives off, I got this copy because I like experimental games like my last review where it was an experimental compilation of mini games, and I enjoyed it. This one is just not it for me, maybe for some but this one did not felt like a blast from the past 90s nostalgia. Update: I did say I would buy the soundtrack if they released it and I did. Love the tracks.
If you like what you are reading then please consider to subscribe in My Curator Page for more like this.

1997 Reloaded: A Cold Case Visual Novel with 90’s Music at its Heart
1997 Reloaded introduces us to Gaigo Studio’s ‘Roxyverse’ alternate history where grunge never gained popularity and where Los Angeles was the epicentre of the alt-rock revolution. With its clever use of mixed media, immersive soundtrack (featuring a selection of authentically 90's-style alt rock, soul & R 'n B songs composed for the game to ground us firmly in the universe’s musical scene), and an instantly-recognisable graphic-novel visual style that immediately put me in the mindset of enjoying a comic book due to its use of solid black lines and bold colours, 1997 Reloaded was a very enjoyable, engaging read that I knocked out in about 5 hours, and is ideal for visual novel fans who don’t mind a mostly linear plot. It doesn't have branching paths or alternate endings, but its story delivers quality over quantity and will stay with you well after you finish. Fun Factor: 3/5 Gameplay: 3/5 Story, Characters & Worldbuilding: 4/5 Maps & Environment: 4/5 Music: 4/5 Time to 100%: 5.2 Hours Recommended: Yes!
An intriguing and twisting storyline that kept me hooked! The artwork is very unique and the original soundtrack really made the game feel it’s own
If you like powerful and emotional stories, stories that leave a mark on you, this one is for you. THE PLOT (AVOIDING SPOILERS) I can’t tell much of the plot without spoilers! Suffice it to say that it’s a coming-of-age adventure revolving around three kids finding an answering machine at a flea market that contains a spooky message from 1997. The kids are honestly confused and also moved by this voice revealing that a murder has happened, and they start realising that the past is never too far, and that past wrongs should be amended. It’s a story about justice, set in 2023 and in an alternate music scene in 1996 and 1997. An ‘ENHANCED COMIC’ ‘1997 RELOADED’ is by definition an ‘enhanced comic’. You can get the vibe by watching the product page here on Steam already, but when you dive into it, that’s when you really understand what an ‘enhanced comic’ is. And you completely enjoy it! It’s like reading a graphic novel brought to life by a compelling sound design and an atmospheric soundtrack, with every frame being the equivalent of a comic book panel. The dialogues appear in balloons (with each character also having their own colour to make it easy to understand who’s talking, or in any case to add a touch of their personality to their text). The colours are captivating, the hand-drawn images look so good, so different from the usual video game aesthetics, with what look like water-coloured backgrounds opposed to characters drawn with black edges to stand out. LINEAR STORY The story is linear, there are no choices that will alter the plot in the end (although there are small cosmetic choices here and there which allow you to grab a different perspective on things). MINI-GAMES (TESTING YOUR ATTENTION!) There are also a couple of mini-games in the ‘enhanced comic’ format, as declared in the game description, that I personally enjoyed, as they didn’t distract me too much from the story. One of which is a quiz that tests your knowledge of the characters, forcing you to go back to the so-called Reading Room to look for clues. I found it funny, especially because it was true that by reading so fast to find out the truth, I hadn’t really taken in some names on the way! THE ROXYVERSE When you finish ‘1997 RELOADED’, you are left with the feeling that there is so much more to it, that this is just a piece of a universe – the developers call it ‘The Roxyverse’ – and that there are more interesting stories waiting for you, somewhere in the distance. It’s a nice feeling. Although the experience is complete, it leaves the door open, so to speak. MUSIC LOVERS One last thing: it’s a story about musicians for the most part, and music plays an essential role in it. So I would recommend this game also to those people who are into music and like reading music magazines, collecting records, reading rockstars’ biographies and, in a word, exploring what it means to be a rocker.
